Located in LaFayette, Georgia, Traverse Park brings the city’s strong outdoor identity into the heart of the community. At the centre of this multi-use recreation destination is a striking 9-metre freestanding climbing tower designed and built in partnership with EP Climbing.
The climbing area gives residents and visitors an accessible place to discover the sport, develop their skills and connect with the exceptional outdoor climbing available throughout the region. Integrated alongside an inclusive playground, skate park, disc golf, walking trails and gathering spaces, the climbing structures form part of a broader approach to recreation designed for different ages, interests and abilities.
For LaFayette, the outdoors have always been part of the community’s identity. The city sits close to some of the southeastern United States’ best-known climbing destinations, including Rock Town, Lost Wall and Zahnd on Pigeon Mountain, with Chattanooga climbing areas also nearby. But having world-class outdoor recreation close to home does not necessarily mean everyone has the equipment, knowledge, transport or confidence to experience it.
Traverse Park grew from years of research and strategic planning around what makes LaFayette distinctive. Rather than creating another conventional park, the city chose to build a recreation destination connected directly to its natural surroundings and outdoor culture. Climbing became a natural part of that vision.

For experienced climbers visiting LaFayette, Traverse Park provides a visible connection to the natural climbing destinations surrounding the city. For residents, it offers something equally important: a place to experience climbing close to home.
The 9-metre freestanding climbing tower, together with six boulders offering different sizes and difficulty levels, creates opportunities for a broad range of users. First-time climbers can find an approachable introduction to the sport, while more experienced climbers can train and challenge themselves. Combined with the city’s outdoor recreation programmes, the facility can also provide a pathway from a first climbing experience to exploring the region’s natural climbing resources.
That progression is already visible within the community. One local family discovered the wall through a youth climbing programme. The parents soon joined their child, eventually buying their own climbing shoes and chalk bags and returning regularly to climb together. It is a simple example of how the right recreation environment can turn a first experience into a lasting activity.
Accessibility is another important part of Traverse Park’s impact.
Paul, a paraplegic climber who lost both legs, has used the wall while working his way back into climbing. Previously, accessing a larger indoor climbing facility could require travelling to Chattanooga, adding both time and expense. Traverse Park provides a climbing resource much closer to home.
His experience illustrates the different roles community climbing infrastructure can play. The wall can be a place to try climbing for the first time, develop skills, train regularly, rebuild confidence or simply spend time outdoors.
The impact of Traverse Park extends beyond climbing itself. Visitors from across the southeastern United States have come to experience the park, bringing additional activity to downtown LaFayette and its local businesses. Climbing parties are regularly booked, youth programmes have introduced young people to the sport, and summer evenings bring together climbers of different ages and experience levels.
Importantly, climbing is only one part of the destination. The climbing structures sit alongside an inclusive playground, skate park, disc golf, walking trails and gathering spaces, allowing different activities and users to share the same recreation environment.
This integrated approach demonstrates how climbing can complement a broader public recreation strategy — creating another reason for residents and visitors to spend time outdoors while reinforcing the identity of the place itself.
Delivering a distinctive outdoor climbing installation required an understanding not only of climbing wall design, but also of how climbers would actually interact with the finished facility.
For the City of LaFayette, EP Climbing’s knowledge of the sport, focus on quality and responsiveness throughout the project were important parts of the partnership. Communication continued from planning and construction through to the opening of the park.

Traverse Park demonstrates what can happen when recreation infrastructure grows directly from a community’s identity.
LaFayette recognised a gap between having exceptional outdoor resources nearby and making those experiences accessible to more residents. The city responded by creating a place where people can discover climbing, develop skills, spend time together and build the confidence to explore the outdoor opportunities surrounding them.
For municipalities considering how climbing could fit into a wider recreation strategy, Traverse Park offers a compelling example: climbing structures do not need to stand alone to make an impact. They can become part of a broader destination built around community, movement, accessibility and place.
