The road to Paris 2024 officially begins this week at the IFSC Bern World Championships with the best climbers in the world looking to book their tickets to the Olympic Games.
For climbers taking part in the Combined discipline it will be their first chance to compete on the TITAN boulder which will debut in Bern and will be used at Paris 2024 Climbing venue in one year’s time. Ahead of its competitive debut, EP has worked with several commercial walls to install the Titan Wall so anyone can climb on the same wall which will be used in the Olympic Games.
Firstly, the design needed to be much bigger as there are four problems to be set on the wall as opposed to the three problems which were a part of the previous format in Tokyo. From that we wanted to ensure that the climbers have a full test of their skills so in the design, we worked to ensure that from left to right, the wall had a great variety of angles and furthermore, the routesetters could play and experiment with the change in angles across the wall.
As we mentioned before, we wanted to provide a wall that would challenge the climbers across the full range of angles so we started from 0° on the left hand side and the wall just builds into the imposing big roof on the right hand side of the wall. We think the roof is full of character and is very imposing and we think it will make for a great spectacle in the competition!
We hope that the wall provides inspiration to the routesetters at Bern and in Paris so that it gives them the opportunity to set a competition that will provide a great spectacle for the audiences and also split the athletes clearly in the competition. Then, we wanted to create a wall that not only works in a competition setting but also in a commercial environment so it has been fantastic to see the Titan walls being installed in commercial walls.
The Titan wall has been installed at several walls already at the moment including:
Wandsworth joins Parthian Climbing’s existing sites in Manchester, Reading, Harrogate, and Southampton, with EP Climbing having played a role in the development of each, from complete builds, to renovations and new wall installations.
The vision of a climbing family has become a reality with the creation of Natural Climb. This project reflects the needs that any mountain lover would like to find in their city!
An extension to a project designed and built by EP Climbing in 2015, the new area of the Climbing Lab features the Titan Boulder as the centre-piece.
The TITAN is a new bouldering wall, created by EP Climbing in collaboration with the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC). Its breakthrough shape is designed to offer maximum range for route setting, provide the best viewing angles, and meet the needs of international competitors and amateur climbers alike.
