Turning Unused Spaces into Vibrant Climbing Hubs The University of Maryland Recreation Center

UMD

The University of Maryland has reimagined its recreational offerings with the addition of an indoor bouldering zone, thanks to a student-led initiative and EP Climbing’s expertise. By converting a double racquetball court into a vibrant climbing hub, the university has created a year-round activity space that meets the needs of its student body.

Student-Led Vision Drives Success

Livi Carey, the chair of Maryland Club Climbing in 2023, spearheaded the project after noticing the limitations of outdoor climbing facilities, which were only open two months per semester due to weather.

  • Proposal Approval: Carey’s proposal for a 12-foot indoor climbing wall was approved by the University Facilities Council in April 2023, paving the way for year-round climbing on campus.
  • Motivation: The goal was to provide students with a cost-effective, convenient alternative to the existing outdoor climbing structures and off-campus climbing gyms, eliminating barriers like weather closures, transportation challenges and off campus membership fees.
