Montana State University’s Student Wellness Center in Bozeman, Montana features a 850 sqm (9,214 sq ft) indoor climbing wall system designed and built by EP Climbing. The installation includes 13m (45 ft) rope climbing walls, bouldering, and a Freeform Gear Training Wall integrated into a multi-use campus recreation and wellness facility.
Following a roof collapse caused by excessive snow loading, the university lost its existing climbing wall. EP Climbing provided a temporary bouldering wall to maintain climbing access during the transition, then delivered a new system as part of the 15 000 sqm (162,000 sq ft) wellness center, funded in part through student-approved fees.
The climbing area is organized across seven zones to support different types of use and improve flow within the space:
The distributed layout supports simultaneous use across multiple climbing styles and experience levels within a shared footprint.
Climbing is integrated into Campus Recreation and Outdoor Recreation programming, supporting instruction, clinics, events, and open use within a facility serving approximately 2,100 users per day.
The combination of rope climbing, bouldering, and a dedicated training wall within a multi-zone layout supports higher capacity, flexible programming, and consistent daily use.
The facility was named Rec of the Month by Campus Rec Magazine, recognizing its role within a high-use, integrated campus recreation environment.
