Following the closure of Towne Field House in 2023, Williams College developed the Multipurpose Recreation Center to restore critical indoor recreation and training space while supporting a wide range of athletic and student activities.
As part of the project, EP Climbing designed and installed a 40-foot top rope climbing wall integrated into the facility alongside indoor tennis courts, a 200-meter running track, and multi-use training areas.
The Multipurpose Recreation Center was developed following the demolition of Towne Field House, which had long served as a hub for indoor athletics and recreation on campus.
During the transition between facilities, EP Climbing provided a temporary climbing wall that helped maintain access to climbing while the college's long-term recreation plans moved forward.
The new facility restores space for training, recreation, and organized programming while bringing together a variety of activities under one roof. The building includes tennis courts, a three-lane, 200-meter running track, field event areas, fitness space, and climbing.
The climbing wall supports Williams College Outing Club programming, academic courses, and everyday student recreation.
Integrated directly into the recreation center, the wall expands programming opportunities without requiring a dedicated climbing facility. It serves experienced climbers while introducing new participants to the sport through the college's broader recreation offerings.
The Multipurpose Recreation Center was designed to support a wide range of users and activities while providing the flexibility needed for future recreation programming.
Projects like Williams College demonstrate how climbing can be incorporated into larger recreation environments, creating additional opportunities for participation while complementing the broader goals of the facility.
